Kristin Jordan and Jennifer Savage were absent for this meeting, even though the system is showing them as present (software issues).  Sandra Vasecka arrived at the meeting after roll call.

Ward Boundaries

Marc Henderson from GIS services presented information on Ward district boundaries.  Please see attached presentation for details on information presented. 

Questions from the councilors were posed.  

Heidi West asked about the population regarding area around the Poverello Center.  Marc stated he just used the census data regarding the ward areas.  

Dale Bickell - Wanted to talk a bit about the next processes.  He stated GIS wanted to keep neighborhoods together and how this is setting up things to not have drastic changes as areas grow.  We would like feedback from Councilors, as you best know your wards.

Amber Sherrill - I worry a bit about boundaries flipping back and forth and people not knowing who their Council member is, if it is regularly changing.  

Gwen - I agree. We want people to know who their representatives are.  

Dale - Discussed growth in Missoula and how this is set up to absorb the growth.

There were questions addressed about specific ward areas.  Please see recording for details.  

Amber Sherrill - Made the recommended motion.

Onto consent agenda for public hearing.

  • City Council - First reading and preliminary adoption: Set a public hearing for March 6, 2023, and preliminary adopt an ordinance amending Title 1, Chapter 1.16 entitled “Election Wards” revising and updating Ward boundaries based on new population statistics.
